about

Get Hip Recordings (GH-1023)

Drawn from the semi-empty pockets of two fellows deciding whether to drink another beer or put out a punk-rock record and deciding to do both, Anyway Records released its first 7"--Gaunt's "Jim Motherfucker"--in the summer of 1992 and immediately released a succession of 45's that quickly disappeared in the vast pool of indie-seven inches.

Almost more of a collective of Columbus, Ohio comrades than a conventional "record label," Anyway has always cared more for the feeling between friends stumbling against one another in a crowded bar than for trying to achieve some lofty business goal.

Known primarily for their low-fidelity sound, the Anyway and Datapanik labels came across that distinction purely on accident. All of the cuts on this comp were recorded on a portable four-track over free afternoons--not for the lo-fi aesthetic but for the very nature of the people involved and the economics at hand. Nobody has money in Columbus. (Well, at least none of the people on this compilation.)

Hence the name Sound of Poverty.

All these recordings have been out of print nearly since the day they were released in '92 or '93. Some of the enclosed bands have since broken up (Greenhorn and Vibralux) and others have obtained worldwide fame (New Bomb Turks and Gaunt). And here are the rest: Stupid Fuckin’ Hippie, V-3, Belreve, Appalachian Death Ride, Monster Truck Five, and Log. Enjoy!
